Pastoor Dan Day (Pierce Brosnan) is een held met een eigen TV-show, ambities in vastgoed en een leidende rol in zijn gemeente. Twee van zijn belangrijkste volgelingen Carl Vandeveer (Greg Kinnear) en zijn vrouw Gwen (Jennifer Connelly) zijn ook twee pijlers in de gemeenschap.
