Het verhaal speelt zich af tijdens de De Amerikaanse Burgeroorlog (1861-1865). Abner Beech (Billy Campbell), een koppige en rechtschapen boer uit de staat New York, tart zijn buren en maakt gebruik van zijn recht op de vrijheid van meningsuiting.
